As I’ve shared in previous emails, I’m an avid learner. It’s earned me the title of “the guy who knows a lot about a lot” or in other words, quirky! Even with all the various digital learning modes available in 2023 – podcasts, webinars, YouTube, etc. – I still love a good book and often have 2 or 3 stuffed into my work bag.

Recently I finished Nir Eyal’s book, Indistractable, which really resonated with me because it addresses an ongoing challenge I have in my life, and you may have in yours – my calendar!

I am always looking for ways to better organize my days so that I’m able to spend time in areas of meaningful work. I’m not often successful but it’s something I’m committed to making progress on this year.

In the book Nir writes about timeboxing – a technique used by well-knowns like Elon Musk and Bill Gates for time management. In a nutshell, timeboxing means putting aside the to do list and instead planning your day around what is important to you. Now in full transparency I was skeptical of scheduling every minute of my days – how would that work??!! BUT after learning more about it and seeing how it might actually accelerate my productivity, I’ve decided to try it.

Nir also emphasizes that it’s an iterative process so I’m keeping that in mind as I discover what works and equally importantly doesn’t work for me. I’ll keep you posted on my progress in the battle against my calendar!

Check out Indistractable and see if you’re up for trying timeboxing!
